Weekend Picks: Oct. 2-4, 2009

What’s the haps in CLE this weekend?  With all the gloomy weather we’ve been experiencing this week, I know I’m in need of some indoor events to lighten my mood.

Friday

Capitol Theatre Grand Re-Opening
Tonight from 7-11, celebrate the grand re-opening of the historic Capitol Theatre in the Gordon Square Arts District. Tickets are almost sold out, but if you show up at the theatre around 6:30, you may be able to get the hook up to see Toy Story 1&2 in 3D, and join the afterparty at the Detroit Shoreway atrium from 9-11.  Cost: $35.

Pekar Project
Harvey Pekar, the mastermind behind the American Splendor comics, will have an art exhibition at the Pennollo Gallery in Little Italy tonight, from 7-10 PM. Enjoy live music and light refreshments, as well as some interesting modern art, at this free event.

MC Chris at the Grog Shop
MC Chris, a geeky rapper from Chicago that started his career in comedy, will be at the Grog Shop tonight for a show beginning at 10 PM. With songs that extoll his love of Reese’s Pieces and girls who can beat him in Joss Whedon trivia, I seriously can’t get enough of this quirky guy. If you’re a fan of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, you may know MC Chris better as “MC Pee Pants,” the candy-loving spider. Honestly… what’s not to love? Tickets $14 day of show.

Tip: Be like me and head out right after work to get some Coventry enjoyment in before the show.

Friday & Saturday

Hedwig Lakewood

Hedwig and the Angry Itch at the Hi-Fi
This is your last weekend to check out Hedwig and the Angry Itch, the rock & roll musical about a transexual rock star that has been getting rave reviews. Show is at the Hi Fi in Lakewood, and performances are at 8 PM on Friday, and both 7 and 10 PM on Saturday. Tickets $20.

Saturday

Phrends Phall Phest
Head to Around the Corner from 5-7 PM on Saturday, get pumped for the Ohio State game and support the Providence House, a crisis housing facility for children age 5 and under. For $20, you get unlimited food and beer, plus cornhole and live entertainment.  Not to mention, you get to support a great cause.

Tip: If you stick around until 9, you’ll also get to witness the Around the Corner’s weekly Hermit Crab Race.

Waterloo Speakeasy
Support Arts Collinwood with a night of casino-style gaming (including, of course, poker and blackjack), food, drinks and prizes taking place from 6 PM – midnight at the Slovenian Home Ballroom. Bonus: 30′s style, speakeasy dress is encouraged. They’ll even have costumes available for rent. Cost is $25.

Sunday

Wise UP!
Form 4-9 PM at Nighttown check out a local compilation of celebrities, literary greats and friends of the arts who will each recite a short poem or piece of prose, interspersed with musical numbers with literary themes.  There will be two different and separate shows at 5 PM and 7 PM, each costing $20 per person. Proceeds  benefit the Friends of the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library.
